Royal Rumble WWE has always been the second largest event on the calendar of the WWE and has created tons of excitement among fans of fighting.
The annual January event is built around a 30-man royal top rope battle, giving the winner a WrestleMania title match. With the Royal Rumble around the corner this year( Jan. 31, Georgia Dome), it’s a great time to take a look at the top ten moments of the Royal Rumble match…
Shawn Michaels escapes elimination in and outlasts 29 competitors; 1995 Royal Rumble
One of the best Royal Rumble WWE matches ever, Michaels and the British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith were both the first and the second players in the match and survived the match as well as the last two men.

Michaels was thrown over the top rope at the end of the match and ALMOST was eliminated by Smith, but he held on and only one of his feet touched the ground. As Smith celebrated, Michaels returned to the ring and removed him. It was the first time ever that a WWE wrestler was the first to win the Royal Rumble.
Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior face off; 1990 Royal Rumble
A very remarkable moment for a few reasons, both wrestlers were champions at the time( Hulk Hogan was the WWF Champion, Warrior was the Intercontinental Champion), it remains the only time a World Champion has competed in the Royal Rumble match.

This was the first and only Royal Rumble match of Warrior and it was the first major confrontation between the two great superstars. Warrior prevented Rick Rude and Barbarian from eliminating Hogan, Hogan returned his favor by eliminating Warrior. This would create a big feud between the two and a match that year in WrestleMania.
Austin wins 2001 Royal Rumble WWE for THIRD Time
In their wrestling careers, Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin each won two straight Royal Rumble matches, but only Austin was able to win a third time. He remains the only wrestler in history to fulfill the feat. In 2001, he succeeded in winning the match by eliminating Kane with some vicious chair shots and a wardrobe.
Hulk Hogan eliminates tag team partner Randy Savage; 1989 Royal Rumble
They were the world’s biggest tag team, Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan, but the Royal Rumble was a turning point for the duo in 1989. In the match, Hogan accidentally eliminated Savage, which almost led to blows between the two, because Savage was so angry.
They kept things together that night, but things would never be the same, and two months later they would face WrestleMania.
John Cena surprise 30th entrant; 2008 Royal Rumble
A torn pectoral muscle put John Cena on the sidelines and everyone thought he couldn’t physically return to fight until much later in 2008, but the former World Champion shocked fans two years ago when he came out as the 30th entry. He eventually won the match by eliminating Triple H and set a record by a Royal Rumble winner for the shortest time in the ring.
Bret Hart and Lex Luger BOTH declared winners; 1994 Royal Rumble
Over a decade later, fans would see a similar finish with Batista and John Cena, but officials resumed the match in that case. This is the only Royal Rumble with two winners who have received title shots from BOTH. It was an exciting finish that stopped immediately; Hart and Luger timed the finish perfectly and at the same time hit the ground.
Vince McMahon and Steve Austin go all over the building; 1999 Royal Rumble
McMahon and Austin fought in the ring, in the crowd, in the bathrooms of the arena, at the announcer’s table and more during Rumble’s’ 99. With Austin and McMahon it was unpredictable to make the match their own personal battlefield.
Steve Austin sets record, eliminates 10 wrestlers; 1997 Royal Rumble
Austin broke the record of Hulk Hogan by eliminating 10 competitors in the’ 97 match, won by throwing Bret Hart over the top rope. Undertaker, Vader, Jesse James, Savio Vega, Marc Mero, Owen Hart, Jake Roberts, Bart Gunn, and Phineas Godwinn were eliminated by Stone Cold.
Mick Foley enters match THREE times; 1998 Royal Rumble
At that time, Foley had three gimmicks– Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love– all three made appearances and eliminated at least one wrestler in the rumble match in 1998. Fans enjoyed all three entries from Foley’s different people at the sheer goofiness of the concept.
Ric Flair wins the 1992 Royal Rumble WWE Title
Remains the only Royal Rumble WWE match in history to win the title; Flair was the third player to win the match and outstripped Hulk Hogan, the Undertaker, Sid, Randy Savage and Rowdy Piper.

Becky Lynch won the Women’s Royal Rumble 2019. As she pulled out a terrific Royal Rumble hat win after pulling Asuka out at the beginning of the night. In the Royal Rumble, she replaced a wounded Lana and won the whole thing. The sort of mental determination that Lynch shows is why she calls herself the man.
